Has Child Benefit Increased?

A lot of benefits were increased in April 2023 in line with the 10.1% inflation rate. Child benefit is one of the things that are included in this increase.

For 2022/23 the child benefit rate was £21.80 for the eldest child and £14.45 for any subsequent children.

For 2023/24 this has increased to £24 for the eldest child and £15.90 for subsequent children.

Child benefit is payable as soon as the child is born and is payable until they are 16 or if they are in approved education or training, until they are 20.

As child benefit is paid in 4 weekly tranches this means that you will be paid £96 for the eldest and £63.60 for other children. You can also have it paid weekly in certain circumstances.

So you may see the following payments in your account according to the number of children you have:

Number of Children Amount Paid Every 4 Weeks
1 £96
2 £159.60
3 £223.20
4 £286.80
5 £350.40
6 £414

Unlike some other benefits there is no limit on payments for the number of children you have.

However, if you earn over £50,000 you may not be entitled to Child Benefit (but can still claim other benefits linked to it like credits for State Pension) – you can work out if you are subject to a charge which reduces your child benefit about by checking here.
